iCloud Drive was first introduced in iOS 8, which allows you to store all your documents in iCloud. Normally, iCloud Drive just works in the background. That means you will have to enable it. In iOS 9, iCloud Drive is more useful and accessible, providing users with many new features.

In iOS 9, iCloud Drive allows you to browse, view and manage all your documents stored in your iCloud account. Previously, you could access iCloud Drive via a feature called Finder on a Mac, via iCloud for Windows, or on icloud.com. You now can access your iCloud Drive in the same way on your iPhone or iPad.

How to enable iCloud Drive on your iPhone/iPad

By default, iOS 9 for your iPhone and iPad includes iCloud Drive, allowing you to browse all your files stored in your iCloud Drive. That’s the same way you do in Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. However, unlike other cloud storage services, iCloud Drive is a passive service which is always running in the background. You will have activate it from the Settings menu.

To enable iCloud Drive, you just need to launch the Settings app on your Home screen, tap the iCloud category, and select iCloud Drive. Then, you will see an option labeled Show on Home Screen on the iCloud Drive screen, toggle the button to the right (green) to enable it. An iCloud Drive icon will appear on your home screen and you can tap to launch the app.

How to use iCloud Drive

  • View and manage files

If you have ever used iCloud Drive on Mac OS X or Windows, you will quickly master iCloud Drive on your iPhone or iPad.

After enabling iCloud Drive on your iPhone, you will see a list of all your files stored in iCloud Drive, just need to tap to view them and move, delete or share them with your friends.

Besides, you can tap Select to select multiple files at once, and use Delete or Move buttons to delete your files or move them to other folders. You can use the Share button to share your files to other apps. Besides, you can print and send your files via AirDrop using the Share button.

You can sort your files by date, name or tag by pulling down from the top of the screen. You will also be able to view how much space you have left in your iCloud account at the bottom of the screen.

  • Edit files

iCloud Drive offers a useful editing tool. You just need to open your file, tap the Share button and choose the app you want to export your file to. This will create another copy of your file.

To edit files with its associated app, you just need to download the app first. For example, you can’t just open iCloud Drive app, tap the Pages folder and select a document to edit it in the Pages app. You will need to open the Pages app and choose a file from within it.

Apple’s iCloud Drive is easy to use. Specifically, you can’t even directly open documents for editing in Pages app, Number and Keynotes.

However, iCloud Drive is a useful tool to view all your files stored in Cloud , manage them and share them with other apps and your friends. It is early to say that Apple’s iCloud Drive will succeed, but Apple has been working hard to improve its storage service.
