MacOS allows opening different file types, which are common with current operating systems. But opening RAR files on Mac is always a challenge. Unfortunately for MacOS users, there is not any built-in app for opening the file format. So, in this post, we are going to share with you methods to open RAR files on your Mac.
How to Open RAR Files on Mac with The Unarchiver
Downloading and installing The Unarchiver is also simple. To get started, you need to open the App Store by going to Finder > Applications on the left, and then locating App Store. Next, double-click to launch the app. You can also find App Store icon in the Dock. Simply click on its icon to launch the App Store.
Now, use the search bar, type in “The Unarchiver,” and press “Return” and the related search results will appear on the screen. All you need is locating The Unarchiver and click on Get, and then select INSTALL APP. If you want to know more about the app before downloading, just click on the app title. You will be taken to the product page.
- Open The Unarchiver
To launch the newly-installed app, simply click on the Launchpad icon in the Dock. From there, you can find The Unarchiver’s icon. Click on it to open The Unarchiver on your MacOS. You will be greeted with a splash screen, which you can dismiss before using the app.
- Ensure to check the “RAR Archive” box
To open RAR files on your Mac, you should ensure that the checkbox near “RAR Archive” is chosen. It authorizes The Unarchiver to launch these file types on your Mac. If it’s left unchecked, the app cannot open RAR files.
- Locate your RAR file in Finder within Download tabs
You have just downloaded your RAR file from the internet or an attachment file from an email. Your macOS will save that file into the Downloads folder if you don’t move it afterwards.

- Right-click on your RAR file
Now, right click on your RAR file to open up the contextual menu. You will be presented with a number of options. Just move to the Open With option, and then drag your cursor to The Unarchiver. Select this option.
After that, the Unarchiver will automatically extract the contents of the RAR file, and put it into a new folder. From there, you can see all of folders and files that were not previously accessible. Just by following these mentioned steps, you can easily open RAR files on Mac without any issue.
If you want to configure your app‘s functions, you can do it by changing a few settings. All you need is opening The Archiver, and then click on the Extraction tab:
The Unarchiver will then extract your files to the same location as your RAR file. If you want to manually choose a location of The Unarchiver extracted files, just click on the drop-down menu and select “Ask for a destination folder.”
If you want to store your original RAR file once it’s extracted, you can move it to the Trash to get more space.
